About This Pattern

Best for

Social media feeds, image galleries, news feeds, and exploratory content browsing.

Advantages

  • Smooth, uninterrupted browsing experience
  • Engaging for content discovery (social feeds, endless galleries)
  • Good for mobile UX and touch interfaces
  • Encourages exploration and serendipitous discovery
  • No clicking required, fully immersive

Disadvantages

  • Hard to reach the footer (e.g., site links, contact)
  • Users lose sense of progress ("Where am I?")
  • Bookmarking/sharing specific positions is difficult
  • Poor for SEO if not implemented with paginated URLs
  • Can be overwhelming for goal-oriented tasks

Best Practices

  • Show progress indicator ("Showing 80 of 500")
  • Allow users to jump back to top easily
  • Implement proper paginated URLs for SEO (Google docs)
  • Avoid infinite scroll for goal-driven tasks (e.g., ecommerce checkout)
  • Provide "Back to top" button after significant scrolling
